The beauty of
harvest
丰收之美
By our staff correspondents □ 本刊综合
Recently, at the Yong’an Haicai Planting Base
in Yousuo Township, Eryuan County, Dali Bai Au-
tonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, the edible
aquatic plants known as haicai (Ottelia acuminata)
have entered the harvest season. Farmers row their
homemade boats to gather haicai, presenting a pic-
turesque harvest scene.

Haicai, an aquatic plant featuring white flowers and yellow
stamens, is native to China. Its flowers are highly ornamental,
and its stems and leaves are commonly found on dining tables in
Dali Prefecture.
Haicai has extremely high requirements for its growing envi-
ronment, thriving only in clean, transparent water bodies, earning
it the nickname “touchstone” of water quality. In recent years,
with increased protection efforts, the water quality of Dali’s Erhai
Lake has continued to improve, and the natural distribution area
of haicai has expanded to approximately 250,000 square meters.
With the increase in demand for haicai, artificial cultivation of
this plant has become a profitable industry for local farmers. In
Eryuan County, the area dedicated to artificial haicai cultivation
has expanded to nearly 140 hectares, yielding an output value
of tens of millions of yuan. Researchers have made significant
breakthroughs in haicai storage and preservation technology,
extending its freshness period by 12 days. This advancement has
overcome the previous limitation of haicai’s short freshness peri-
od, making it suitable for long-distance transportation and further
supporting its industrial development.
