This year marks the 50 anniversary of China’s discovery of
th
tropical rainforests, a finding that was shared with the world in
1974. During a field investigation in Mengla County, Xishuang-
banna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Chinese botanists identified
the rainforest’s representative species, Parashorea chinensis,
from the Dipterocarpaceae family. This discovery confirmed
the existence of a rainforest at 21 degrees north latitude. To-
day, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture stands as the
best-preserved area of China’s tropical ecosystem, showcasing
a remarkably beautiful and vibrant rainforest. In this issue, our
reporters will take you into the heart of the rainforest to experi-
ence its unique rhythms.

今年是中国发现热带雨林 50 周年。1974 年，中国植物学家在西
双版纳傣族自治州勐腊县考察时，发现了热带雨林的代表性树种——龙
脑香科的望天树，向世界证实了北纬 21 度热带雨林的存在。如今，西
双版纳傣族自治州是中国热带生态系统保存最完整的地区，珍藏着一片
