Marvelous traditional Chinese instruments
传统乐器多精彩
Pipa
琵琶
An important traditional Chinese
instrument, the pipa is played in
an upright position. The left hand
presses the strings while the right
Dizi hand plucks them with five fingers,
and it features several distinct
笛子 playing styles.
The dizi (flute) is a prominent
instrument in Chinese music and is
recognized as the oldest Han Chinese
instrument discovered to date,
celebrated for its rich expressiveness.
Hulusi
葫芦丝
The hulusi (cucurbit flute) is
characterized by its unique shape and
construction, made from a natural gourd, three
bamboo pipes, and three metal reeds. It is
commonly used for performing folk melodies,
including mountain songs and farming tunes,
with notable pieces like “Fernleaf Hedge
Bamboo Under Moonlight.”
Suona
唢呐
The suona
produces a
penetrating and
powerful sound, often
characterized by its
“blazing presence.”
Dragon-Head Sanxian
龙头三弦
The Dragon-Head Sanxian is distinguished
by its unique shape, featuring a dragon-head
decoration at the top of the instrument. This dragon
head is ornately painted, and some instruments
also showcase intricately carved patterns on their
bodies. The finest Dragon-Head Sanxians are
crafted by Bai artisans in Jianchuan County, Dali
Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province.
