This year’s Spring Festival holiday in Yunnan Province witnessed
a lively surge of activity, with crowds gathering at numerous locations.
Popular attractions included folk tourism, rural experiences, extended-stay
sojourns, and study tours, all offering vibrant scenes and unique experiences.
Traditional Spring Festival customs intertwined seamlessly with intangible
cultural heritage, weaving a rich tapestry of cultural warmth.
During the Spring Festival, Nanping Street in Kunming was trans-
formed with festive decorations, creating a vibrant celebratory atmos-
phere. The central plaza featured a stage where captivating performances
of traditional Chinese operas, including Beijing opera, Yunnan opera, and
Huadeng opera, enthralled both locals and tourists. At the Fubao Peninsu-
la in Guandu District, the impressive performances of Spring Festival folk
customs, including stilt walking and the Chinese Warrior Dance (Yingge
dance), conveyed auspicious meanings to attendees. Guests also had the
chance to participate in activities such as printmaking, lacquer fan craft-
ing, and sugar figure blowing, all while enjoying the festive market along-
side the shores of Dianchi Lake.
The ancient town of Guandu was beautifully decorated with 3,000
lanterns and over 20 interactive installations, featuring themes like “Ser-
pent Welcomes the New Year,” floral gift boxes, and a stunning waterfall
of roses. Visitors savored local delicacies such as steamed cakes and rice
cakes while enjoying captivating performances of Yunnan opera, tradi-
tional Chinese arts, dragon and lion dances, and various ethnic dances.
They also participated in intangible cultural heritage activities, including
Yunnan go pieces and silver-inlaid black copperware crafting, ensuring a
culturally enriching experience during the Spring Festival.
In Huaning County, Yuxi City, the village of Wanyao celebrated the
festive season with a grand kiln opening ceremony. The lively atmosphere
was filled with an array of colorful teacups, bowls, and vases that capti-
vated visitors. Traditional performances, including dragon and lion dances
as well as the cigarette box dance, contributed to the celebratory spirit.
Huaning ceramic auctioneers showcased freshly made pottery and kicked
off the bidding with an initial price of “0 yuan,” sparking enthusiastic par-
ticipation and cheers from the crowd. “This tourist experience is incred-
ibly interactive and engaging, allowing everyone to immerse themselves
in the cultural heritage and unique charm of Huaning pottery,” said Wu
Yong, who traveled from Liaoning Province to celebrate the Spring Festi-
val in Yunnan.
Every evening on Sifang Street in Lijiang Ancient Town, the lively
bonfire dance takes center stage. At the ancient theater square in Black
Dragon Pool Park, locals don festive attire and invite tourists to join their
dance troupe. Meanwhile, in Sifang Tingyin Square of Shuhe Ancient
Town, the Spring Festival series of cultural activities are being held. Peo-
ple are singing and dancing together, sharing the joy of the Spring Festival
with every visitor.
As night descends in Weixin County, Zhaotong City, the first spray of
molten iron hurtles skyward. Against the inky darkness, resplendent iron
flowers burst into bloom, resembling shooting stars. The impressive specta-
cle, at a searing 1,600℃, elicits waves of applause from the audience. Iron
flower performer Fan Xiansheng said, “The iron flower and dragon dance
performances are crafts handed down from our ancestors. They’re not merely
shows but also a precious cultural heritage.” He hopes to convey good wishes
to everyone through the Spring Festival’s iron flower display.
In Heshun Ancient Town of Tengchong in Baoshan, a cultural parade
themed “Zou Yi Fang” (which in the past denoted the practice of locals
journeying to Southeast Asia to seek a livelihood) offers visitors a vibrant
cultural feast. The meandering parade begins at the entrance of the ancient
town, weaving through archways and ancient bridges, creating a narrative
that showcases Heshun’s rich history and connects centuries of memories.
Throughout the parade, the elegance of Myanmar dance, the enchanting
melodies of Indian music, and the lively movements of Thai dancers come
together, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the charming atmos-
phere and experience the essence of Southeast Asian culture.
