Folks in Dali enjoy green-
bean dishes in March
大理青豆宴,吃出 3 月春味
As March arrives, more than 90,000 mu (about 6,000 hec-
tares) of broad beans in Eryuan county of Dali Bai autonomous
prefecture in Yunnan province, are gradually entering the har-
vest season. Early-maturing broad beans bring the locals first
income of spring and great dishes to the dining table.
Locals traditionally refer to early-maturing broad beans as
green beans. In a Bai folk courtyard of Taohuayuan village of
Eryuan, Yang Ying’s family is busy peeling freshly picked beans,
preparing for a bean feast. Braised rice with beans is core dish of
the feast. After the beans, diced ham and potatoes are fried, they
are put into a pot. After mixing evenly with washed rice, the mix-
ture is then simmered for about two hours over a wood fire, creat-
ing a pot of fragrant rice.
Grilled bean rice cakes require cooking the beans, draining
them, and kneading them with glutinous rice flour into dough.
They are then pan-fried in oil, with low heat being the key. As
they are grilled, they are pressed until both sides turn golden
brown. After grilling, they are folded while hot, then sliced into
small pieces. After a busy morning, the bean feast is complet-
ed. (Yunnan Gateway)
Flowers add joy to Dali-
Chongqing train trip
坐火车从大理出发,邂逅十二“花神”
The train G2850 from west Yunnan Dali city to Chongqing
West Station staged a delightful party themed on spring on
March 11.
Yunnan is renowned as the Kingdom of Flowers, and twelve
stewardesses decorated the train’s interior with flowers early in the
morning, so that passengers can enjoy the beauty of flowers.
The stewardesses dressed up like flowery fairies, drawing
inspiration from ancient Chinese costumes, folk music, and tra-
ditional culture. They also presented cultural heritages and had
traditional shows to passengers. (Yunnan Gateway)
